You can’t raise a glass to ‘Welfare Wednesday’, say department chiefs

A pub has been ordered to remove a Government department logo from a cut-price drinks promotion targeting social welfare recipients.

Liz Delaney's Pub, located in Coolock in north Dublin, is advertising pints of popular beers and spirits at reduced prices on 'Welfare Wednesday'.

Joan Burton's department criticised the poster which includes the 'dove in hand' logo.

Wording on the poster also states that those looking to avail of the cut-price alcohol must be able to prove they are in receipt of social welfare benefits.

"On presentation of a social welfare card or bus pass. All day and night every Wednesday," the advertisement states.

Liz Delaney's pub could not be contacted for comment last night. However, several politicians expressed outrage at the promotion and criticised the advert.
