The country's national student body has warned young people not to take ADHD prescription medication as a study aid.
Cat O'Driscoll, education officer with the USI, said there were "definitely instances" of young people opting to take the drugs prescribed to people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder merely to help focus on their studies.
However, she added: "It is not as big a problem as in the UK and the US."
She said medications were being seized in the post and it was far harder to access ADHD medications such as Ritalin in Ireland.
Ms O'Driscoll said the USI was worried about third-level students opting to take a stimulant drug they were not prescribed in an attempt to boost their concentration levels for studying
