UCC is considering offering dedicated “quiet housing blocks” for students after three people signed up for its new, alcohol-free accommodation.
College authorities said they were happy with the response as the three candidates enter the final phase of taking up residence in UCC’s first, dedicated, booze-free units in the college-run Victoria Lodge complex at Victoria Cross.
They will meet each other and will then have to sign a contract agreeing to adhere to the alcohol regulations.
Three ‘dry’ apartments — which can each take up to four people — were made available at the complex following the announcement of the self-policing, pilot project last month.
The three candidates were selected from a shortlist of 25 valid applications: they all said they wanted to live in an environment more conducive to study.
UCC Health Matters and UCC Campus Accommodation, who are co-ordinating the initiative, said even though just three people have signed up for the scheme, they are happy with the take-up.
“We are happy with the initial response this pilot scheme has generated as it has provided a decent starting, and talking point for generating further interest in the future,” a spokesperson said. “From here, limited advertising of alcohol-free accommodation is likely to take place again after Christmas for students who may not be happy with their current type of accommodation or have a renewed interest following their initial query.
“The next peak time for uptake of accommodation of this nature will of course be roughly this time next year.
“We may also begin exploring early next year the related notion of a pilot designated ‘quiet’ housing block for students interested in that particular type of environment.”
