A group of selfless workers from the North Dublin Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force, based in Swords decided to sleep rough on Main Street, Swords last Thursday night. The purpose was to highlight the problem of homelessness in the country and the North County in particular.

In the process, they collected valuable funds for homeless charity, Focus Ireland. The group consisted of Brid Walsh (co-ordinator of North Dublin Drug and Alcohol Task Force, along with colleagues, Vince Rellis and Katie Murphy. They were joined on the sleep-out by Billy Keating, who works for Richies Bikestore.

Brid told the County Leader about how the the plan came about. “A few of us in the North Dublin Regional Task Force and the Community Care service, as well as Billy Keating decided that we really want to do something to highlight the homeless situation in the North County. We thought it would be appropriate to sleep out in solidarity with homeless people. We cannot possibly experience what this is like on an ongoing basis, as we can return to nice comfortable beds after just one night. We will get a small taste of what’s it’s like to be homeless,” said Brid.
