It is now a year since restrictions on the sale of over-the-counter medications containing codeine came into force.
They have to be stored out of view and customers who want to buy them have to talk to the pharmacist about their symptoms.
The advice is that codeine medicines can become addictive and they should only be used when deemed necessary and for the shortest period of time.
The abuse of over-the-counter codeine products has not been the subject of a great deal of research but one study, carried out by St Patrick's psychiatric hospital in Dublin, has shed some light on the addiction.
