Sharing prescription drugs can be a costly mistake

Large numbers of third-level students may be sharing and borrowing each other's prescribed medicines in order to save money, according to a new study.

Researchers at University College Cork surveyed 345 students to find out how prevalent this practice is among undergraduates.

The study, led by Eimear Goulding, showed 20.3pc admitted sharing another's prescription medicine and 12pc said they both shared and borrowed the drugs in order to avoid the cost and inconvenience of going to a doctor.

Those who borrowed the medicines believed they were at less risk of side effects from taking other people's prescriptions than those who did not share medicines, the study presented to the recent agm of the Psychological Society of Ireland revealed.
