Over-the-counter addictions soaring, doctor warns

Ireland spent a staggering €21m on the codeine-based painkiller Solpadeine last year and experts are warning of a growing addiction to the drug.

Sales of Solpadeine are rapidly increasing every year here -- it's a €3m rise since 2006, when the Irish spent more than €18m on the product.

Solpadeine is the country's best known codeine painkiller and biggest-selling over-the-counter drug in pharmacies.
