Minimum drink prices are being backed by the junior minister in charge of the national alcohol strategy, despite legal challenges being mounted against such measures in Scotland.
The much-delayed national alcohol strategy will finally go before the Cabinet at the start of next month. It will raise controversial issues, including minimum pricing, alcohol advertising and curbs on sponsorship of sporting events by drinks companies.
Labour's Alex White, who has responsibility for the strategy, confirmed that the final plans would be put before the Government in the first week of March.
On alcohol pricing, sponsorship of events and advertising, Mr White said any effective strategy would have an adverse effect on these sectors.
