Middle-class illegal drug use ‘fuels’ crime in inner city Dublin

TD claims wealthy recreational drug users contributing to drug trade and murders

Independent TD Maureen O’Sullivan claimed “middle and wealthy Ireland” had contributed to crime levels in Dublin’s north inner city through the use of recreational drugs.

“They have also fuelled the drug trade and thus contributed to the murders and the mayhem,” she said.

Ms O’Sullivan, who represents Dublin Central, said tackling criminal justice issues, increasing the police presence and enhancing the Criminal Assets Bureau were welcome but only part of the answer.

“It will not resolve the more fundamental issues that have been neglected for decades,” she added.

The communities had shown great resilience, pride and humour, she said, adding that she acknowledged work had been undertaken.
