Local Students Help Develop New Drugs App

An exciting new drug information app has been launched by the North Dublin Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force, which is based in Swords. The app, called SAND was formally launched on 27th April last in Portmarnock by Dr Gerry McCarney, following a drugs information event for schools.

Brid Walsh (Regional DATF Co-ordinator) spoke to the County Leader about this exciting new initiative. She said, “This was a huge undertaking which was project managed by our incredible Care Co-ordinator, Louise McCulloch and supported by Karen Reid and Jacki Thompson who did trojan work on the collation of information behind the scenes”.

A key feature of the design was to include young people in the process. “We worked with a group of 12 young people from North County Dublin who became our Youth App Development Group. These were Leaving Cert students from Malahide Community School, Skerries Community College and also a young person from Balbriggan Jigsaw Advisory Panel. They met with us and the designers regularly to advise us on the look, functionality and design of the app and were so honest. They had no problem in challenging us to go back to the drawing board if they felt that some design feature wasn’t going to work,” she said.

The app was initially targeted at young people to equip them with information on drugs and alcohol and signpost them to support.
