EU group criticises violence and ‘massive drug consumption’ in Irish prisons

An international watchdog group has criticised the level of drugs and violence in Irish prisons.

The Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture is also concerned about four recent cases of deaths in custody - and said that the Irish Prison Service may have failed in its duty of care.

A delegation who visited Ireland to carry out their research reported several allegations of physical ill treatment by gardaí of people in custody.

It has also criticised the policy of detaining migrants alongside criminals in Cloverhill Prison.
