Elton’s cash finally funding 130 needle exchange programmes

A generous donation from pop-icon Elton John to help combat the spread of HIV in Ireland will be used in over 130 locations outside of Dublin for the first time by the end of the year.

In 2009, the English singer (pictured right) donated €750,000 to the government for the provision of clean needles for drug addicts.

The Irish Independent revealed that not a penny of the donation had been put to use by August 2011 owing to difficulties with recruiting pharmacists.

However, since then it has helped implement Needle Exchange (NEX) Services in pharmacies in 71 locations in every county outside Dublin.
