Declan Lynch: You can get used to just not drinking

To mark the start of Lent, the BBC's Panorama and RTE's Prime Time took aim at the massive problem of alcoholism in these islands and blasted away.

When the elite commandos of the current affairs departments make such a statement, it is supposed to indicate the gravity of the situation, and the importance of finding a solution -- Panorama had Alastair Campbell as its guest presenter, and in their world it doesn't get more important than that.

Yet it all tended to confirm something which we have been exploring for some time in these pages, the fact that the culture of political and current affairs journalism is deeply unsuited to the requirements of a genuinely big subject such as this -- one that is ultimately about the mysterious workings of the human heart and the destruction of men's souls, not the crude bullshit of Leinster House or Westminster.
