Club drug harm reduction for Christmas

Club drug harm reduction information

Christmas is a time for socialising and parties. Some people may be at gatherings where drug use is occurring. Data suggests that the potency of most illicit substances is increasing and that the market place for substances is becoming more varied and accessible.

Dr Eamon Keenan, HSE Clinical Lead for Addiction Services says: “The potency of the drugs may be higher than people anticipate and there is a risk of substances containing adulterants or other unknown drugs. With increased potency there is an increased risk of overdose and serious mental health problems.

“It is always safer not to use drugs, but if you chose to use drugs we want to make people aware of our harm reduction information”.

Think about your health and avoid using drugs if you experience mental or physical health problems. We would encourage people to look after themselves and look out for their friends. Tell your friends if you decide to use drugs.

  • Start low and go slow. Start with a very small test dose and wait at least two hours before taking more.
  • Stay with your friends and do not leave anybody who is intoxicated on their own.
  • Leave the mixing to the DJ. Every time you mix drugs, including alcohol and prescription medication, you increase the risks.
  • Always hydrate with water but don’t drink over a pint an hour. Remember to take breaks from dancing and give yourself time to cool down.
  • Avoid trying drugs or new types of drugs for the first time at events this Christmas. Download our harm reduction posters or factsheets, save them to your phone and share them with people you know that use drugs.
  • You can overdose on stimulant type drugs. An overdose can be serious and could lead to death. Read our resources and know the sign of an overdose and how to reduce the risks.
  • Get help. Don't be afraid to get help if you or a friend become unwell or feel suicidal after using drugs. Call 112 or 999.
