At the Citywide campaign meeting on 9th April, three short videos on the drugs crisis were shown, which were produced to highlight the key issues raised at the previous campaign meeting in October.
- In the video “Crime and Punishment” the contributors speak about the link between social disadvantage and community drug problems and look at the harm done to individuals and communities by criminalising people for using drugs. They speak of the levels of intimidation and violence linked to drugs and drug related debt in our communities. The value of local community projects in addressing the problems is highlighted with research showing a 9 euro saving for every 1 euro invested in drug services.
- The video “Then and Now” looks at how the drugs problem has affected our communities over the years and highlights some of the devastating impacts that are currently being experienced, including serious physical and mental health problems and drug- related deaths, widespread poly-drug use, housing and estate management issues and ongoing violence and intimidation. At the same time as these problems have been developing, resources to projects in disadvantaged areas have been cut by up to 45%.
- There are two videos “Lifelines and Value” and “Support and Future” that look at the work of the Drug Rehabilitation Projects and show the positive impact that these community services have on the lives of drug users, their families and communities. A recent consultation report by Citywide “Barriers or Bridges” outlines the challenges that the DRPs now face in trying to continue this crucial work and the videos illustrate very clearly why it is essential that this work is supported and developed.
