Chaos as massive number of assaults, overdoses and falls put emergency services under strain

New Year's Eve was a busy night for medical teams.

A MASSIVE number of assaults, overdoses and falls associated with New Year's celebrations put emergency services in Dublin under intense pressure as city revellers celebrated the arrival of 2015.

277 ambulance calls were made between 6pm on December 31 and 6am yesterday morning. At one stage around midnight an ambulance call was coming into the Fire Brigade's control centre on Tara Street every 30 seconds.

Multiple cases were being treated simultaneously on Harcourt Street, Dame Street, O'Connell Street and in Temple Bar.

"There were 34 assault cases, 23 drug overdoses and 38 falls treated in the space of a few short hours either side of midnight," said a Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) spokeswoman.
