Cabinet approval sought for supervised injecting facilities

Cabinet approval will be sought today to introduce legislation to establish supervised injecting facilities for drug users.

It aims to provide a controlled environment under the supervision of health professionals for addicts who would otherwise inject on the streets, leaving them prone to overdose and infection.

The first pilot injecting centre is due to be opened in Dublin city centre in the autumn.
