A Northside drugs crisis centre that was launched last week has slammed the Government over the new National Drugs Strategy. The Citywide Drugs Crisis Campaign, based in Fairview, said it does not go far enough to help those suffering the effects of drug addiction. The group, which promotes a community development approach to tackling the drugs problem, claimed the strategy would have potentially damaging effects for local communities.Coordinator at Citywide, Daithi Doolan, said he finds it totally unacceptable that the Government has “relegated the battle against the drugs crisis to that of a part-time job”.
However, Minister of State with the Responsibility for Drugs, John Curran, has hit back at the claim. Minister Curran said the Government has given him direct responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy, adding that he was determined to effectively fulfil that role.
