An exploratory study of injecting mephedrone use in Ireland

Comparative research on mephedrone consumptive patterns undertaken by McElrath and Van Hout in 2011 suggest that laws prohibiting the distribution and possession of psychoactive substances [such as Mephedrone] that were once legal may be ineffective among seasoned drug takers who have experienced positive effects of the substance.

Although follow-up data are needed, both McElrath and Van Hout have learned from the PAIs and other contacts that mephedrone is readily available through illicit markets in their respective regions – nine months after the introduction of legislative controls in these regions.

Although street prices have increased since the introduction of legislative controls, illicit mephedrone is still cheaper than cocaine. In recent months, the PAIs, ground workers, key informants as well as street contacts have indicated the availability of better quality ecstasy tablets in both jurisdictions and an emerging trend of intravenous Mephedrone use.
